About Au Hasard Balthazar

Described by Jean Luc Godard as “the world in an hour and a half”.

Bresson’s poignant study of humanity though the lives of a donkey and its keepers is a masterpiece of allegorical storytelling. Unfolding over a number of years in rural France, Balthazar is passed from owner to owner, becoming both a witness to and victim of their suffering and abuse. Exquisitely told though small details, this poetic and richly textured film holds a mirror up to the world we live in.
