The Roses is partnering with Isbourne Arts in Winchcombe to deliver an exciting new community initiative, Move to Improve — a six-week programme of dance and movement workshops designed to support older adults.

Aimed specifically at people aged 65 and over who are experiencing mobility challenges, the sessions focus on improving fitness, boosting wellbeing and creating opportunities to socialise. Set to music and delivered in a safe, welcoming and accessible environment, the workshops encourage participants to enjoy movement at their own pace while building confidence and strength.

The project has also been a valuable development opportunity for The Roses’ Community & Creative Wellbeing Producer, Megan Dunford. Megan has played a key role in planning the programme, recruiting artists and supporting delivery throughout the sessions.

Megan said:

“Working in partnership with Isbourne Arts, alongside our dance artist Beth, volunteers, and participants, has been incredibly insightful. It’s helping us grow as a community-focused organisation and adapt our approach to be more inclusive and participant-led.

We’re passionate about supporting local artists and facilitators, and we have exciting plans to bring more programmes into our communities that promote wellbeing and health through performance, movement and social connection — watch this space.”

Although still in its early stages, Move to Improve is already making a meaningful impact. Participants have reported noticeable improvements in both confidence and overall wellbeing after just a couple of sessions.

One participant shared:

“I am really enjoying taking part. I’ve already noticed a positive change in my coordination and the music makes it even more fun — even if we do get the moves a bit wrong every now and again!”

Lead facilitator Beth, also highlighted the positive response:

“We’ve had lots of fun so far in our Move to Improve sessions. Everyone has really got stuck in, and their confidence is growing even after just two sessions. We’ve enjoyed exploring a wide range of music, testing coordination and we’re looking forward to building on strength and balance in the coming weeks. It’s a fantastic group in an amazing venue.”

The programme will continue until Wed 27 May and has been generously funded by Tewkesbury Borough Council’s Active Communities Fund.
