On Mon 23 Jun, The Roses took a significant step forward in its mission to deliver inclusive, creative health programming by hosting a successful Artist Gathering. The event brought together creative practitioners eager to explore meaningful work with people living with dementia and their carers.

Our Creative Health and Community Producer, Megan, co-designed and hosted the Artist Gathering in collaboration with Louise, Open Arms Collective. For The Roses, the gathering marks a key milestone in our ongoing commitment to accessible and inclusive arts engagement. It formed part of our NHS ICB Health & Wellbeing grant-funded Dementia Programme, which originated from our Big Give campaign last year where we raised over £2,500 in just one week. This support enables us to develop sustainable evidence-based creative programmes that genuinely serve our community’s needs.

The aim of the Artist Gathering was to build a strong, supportive network with local artists to understand their needs as practitioners and explore how we can support them in working with people living with dementia. Through the Artist Gathering, attendees gained a comprehensive understanding of The Roses’ creative health programme, its development journey and were introduced to core team members and a key collaborative partner.

The gathering brought together a diverse group of creative practitioners all passionate about delivering meaningful person-centred work. It provided a valuable platform for open dialogue, collaboration and reflection on the powerful role the arts can play in dementia care. The enthusiasm, ideas and expertise shared reinforced the importance of this work and its potential for lasting impact.

“This event is just the first of many,” said Meg Dunford, The Roses’ Creative Health & Community Producer. “It’s been so well received and I want to ensure it continues to serve and support our local artists—giving them the tools and space they need to uplift our communities, especially those living with dementia and their carers.”

“This has been such a great session—it’s helped me start planning my next NPO round,” said Rachael Savage, Artistic Director of VAMOS. “Thank you!”

As we continue this journey, we remain dedicated to making The Roses Theatre a truly welcoming and supportive space where everyone can experience the joy, connection and transformative power of the arts. We are looking to launch these Dementia Support sessions in September with more information to be shared in due course.
