About Ella McCay
Ella McCay is an upbeat political comedy-drama about a brilliant and idealistic young woman who suddenly finds herself thrust into the top job - she becomes governor of the state she was born and raised in.
As Ella (Sex Education’s Emma Mackey) attempts to navigate the fierce demands of public office, she’s also juggling a complicated family life: an estranged father’s return, sibling issues, and the lingering grief over her mother’s absence.
The film mixes heartfelt emotional depth with sharp humour, showing how ambition, love, and family drama collide - and sometimes heal - when life doesn’t go by the book. It’s a story about power, family and learning to survive the people you love.
