About Sentimental Value

Receiving a record-breaking 15-minute standing ovation at its Cannes, Joachim Triers’ follow-up to the double Oscar-nominated The Worst Person in the World reunites the director with actress Renate Reinsve who looks set for plenty of red-carpet action for her captivating performance in this poignant, entertaining and intricately plotted story of family, history and the healing power of cinema, which also stars Stellan Skarsgård and Elle Fanning.

Following the death of their mother, sisters Nora and Agnes return to the home they grew up in, a beautiful, lived-in country house with generations of memories etched into its cracked walls. Their estranged father, a renowned filmmaker, turns up unannounced, bearing a script for an autobiographical film about his mother’s experiences in WWII, which he wrote with his eldest daughter in mind for the lead. When she refuses to take the role, he hires a young Hollywood star in her place, triggering a cascade of conflict, resentment and reconciliation as film and family become increasingly intertwined.
