About The History of Sound
In 1917, Boston Conservatory students Lionel, a gifted singer and David, a charismatic pianist, set out on a self-appointed mission to record the voices and songs of their fellow Americans before they vanish into war. Drawn together by music and subtle chemistry, their bond deepens — into friendship, into love, into something unspoken and profound.
Director Oliver Hermanus adapts Ben Shattuck’s short story into a tender, elegiac romance that exists in the spaces between words. Narrated decades later by an older Lionel and with folk arrangements by Sam Amidon, the film is a tactile meditation on sound, love and human connection.
