Maverick (Tom Cruise, in a career-defining role) is a rebellious hotshot pilot, sent to an elite, highly competitive, air combat training academy where he battles rival Ice (Val Kilmer) for top honours. Maverick's hair-raising antics in the air don't impress the senior officers, but they can see he's got skills. Meanwhile, he sees romantic potential, in civilian astrophysics instructor Charlie (Kelly McGillis).
