The Roses Theatre proudly marks its 50th anniversary with a special community exhibition, Standing Ovation, celebrating five decades of memories, performances, and people who have made The Roses a cherished cornerstone of the local community.

The exhibition will run from Tue 18 Nov to Sun 23 Nov in The Roses Upstairs Bar, inviting visitors to journey through the theatre’s remarkable history — from its royal opening by Princess Anne in 1975 to its much-loved annual pantomimes and countless community events.

Visitors can expect to see treasured artefacts including Eric Morecambe’s blazer, hat and chair, the original 1975 opening gala programme and poster, costumes from past pantomimes, and video footage from performances that bring the theatre’s history vividly to life.

“We’re so looking forward to everyone finally being able to experience the exhibition in person,” says Meg Dunford, Creative Health and Community Producer. “The memories we’ve gathered from The Roses community will be on display for all to share and enjoy.”

Since opening its doors on 30 October 1975, The Roses has grown, adapted and endured through times of both celebration and challenge — from funding changes and closures to incredible comebacks driven by local passion and support. Throughout, it has remained a home for creativity, connection and community spirit.

The Standing Ovation exhibition is the culmination of a year-long project inviting those touched by The Roses to share their memories — happy, funny, emotional or moving. Over 100 memories were submitted via the theatre’s “Standing Ovation” postcards and online form. From this a community panel had been formed to help curate the exhibition, selecting memories that reflect the full range of emotions and experiences The Roses has inspired over the past half-century.

The exhibition will also include sensory-friendly sessions, offering a gentler, more accessible experience for all visitors.
