The Roses' Standing Ovation

Our Story

Since opening our doors on 30 October 1975, The Roses has grown, adapted and endured — through times of celebration and challenge alike. From funding changes and temporary closures to remarkable comebacks powered by local passion and support, the theatre has remained a constant home for creativity, connection and community spirit.

To mark our 50th anniversary, we invited our community to share their memories of The Roses. From familiar faces who visit regularly to those who came just once but were deeply moved, every story helped paint a picture of what the theatre means to the people it serves.

More than 100 memories were submitted through our Standing Ovation postcards and online form, each one happy, funny, emotional or inspiring. These contributions became the heart of our Standing Ovation Exhibition, the culmination of a year-long celebration.

A dedicated community panel helped curate the exhibition, carefully selecting stories that reflect the rich range of experiences and emotions The Roses has inspired over the past half-century. Together, these memories form a tribute to the people, performances and moments that have shaped The Roses — and continue to shape its future.
