About Blue Heron

A child’s memory takes flight on Vancouver Island in this cleverly constructed autobiographical drama.

Sasha is eight years old when her family moves into a new home on Vancouver Island. Her older brother Jeremy begins to withdraw—his behaviour growing erratic, then dangerous. Her parents, recent immigrants from Hungary, struggle to cope. Sasha observes it all with inquisitive eyes, processing events over shifting timelines and temporalities, leading to a radical intervention as an adult to reconstruct and repair her past.

It’s best not to say any more about the ingenious narrative structure employed in this lyrical, semi-autobiographical first feature, but be prepared for some surprises. Capturing the ambience of childhood and the subtle textures of family life, it interweaves sensual cinematography with home video, answerphone messages and photographs, evoking a profound sense of nostalgia and regret as it moves towards a shatteringly cathartic conclusion.
