About Sleeping Beauty
Every Christmas, families across Gloucestershire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire pack into The Roses Theatre for the one pantomime that has it all: sing-alongs, slapstick and a villain to boo. This year's Sleeping Beauty is no different.
Sleeping Beauty is set on the eve of the Battle of Tewkesbury in 1471 — the real-life clash that gave the Wars of the Roses its name, and The Roses Theatre its own. Expect the fairy tale you know, retold with a knowing wink to the town outside the theatre doors: familiar local places woven through the story, and (at special performances) maybe even a familiar face or two.
Meet the Team Behind the Mischief
Sleeping Beauty is an in-house production by The Roses Theatre and brought to life by some of British theatre's brightest names. Writer Toby Hulse, a multi-award-winner, and directing is Olivier Award-winner Derek Bond — named Best Family Show director in 2024.
The bespoke set and costume design comes from Jessica Curtis, whose credits include the National Theatre and the Almeida. Designed specifically for this production, her world celebrates Tewkesbury as a town full of stories waiting to be imagined, blending the old and the new found throughout its streets.
