Last week marked Dementia Action Week, a national campaign to raise awareness and improve support for those affected by dementia. It also marked a very special milestone for us — one year since the launch of our Dementia Café.

On Wed 21 May, we proudly joined forces with One Glos at Tewkesbury Market, where they shared vital information and support for carers of people living with dementia. As a community-driven charity, we're committed to supporting all members of our community, and dementia awareness is a cause that remains close to our hearts.

The same day, we also celebrated the first anniversary of our Memory Café — a safe, inclusive, and welcoming space for people living with dementia and their carers. What began with just one participant has grown steadily, with 6–8 regular attendees, and sometimes more, joining us each month.

Led by the wonderful and creative Emma Parkinson and supported by dedicated volunteers with lived experience of dementia care, each session offers a chance to connect through conversation, creativity, or simply companionship. Emma introduces a new artistic activity each session — simple, enjoyable, and accessible to all. These activities often help spark meaningful conversations and encourage social interaction.

“At The Roses, we’re incredibly proud of the strong connection we’ve built with our local community. Our aim is to support and understand each individual in whatever way we can,” said Meg Dunford, Creative Health and Community Producer. “Over the past couple of years, our community programme has grown significantly — we now host everything from Bingo, Choir, and K2Togs (our knitting group), to Quiz Nights, Drink & Draw sessions, and Open Mic Nights. We’re proud to be a vibrant hub for creativity, connection, and community spirit.”

We understand that everyone is different, so we make sure there’s something for everyone — whether it’s painting, board games, a card game, or just a friendly chat over a cup of tea.
