About Wicker

Olivia Colman orders herself a husband made from wicker in this gloriously eccentric fantasy romance about love, loneliness and the dangers of getting exactly what you wish for.

A lonely fisherwoman lives on the edge of a small seaside village, where she is mocked for being unmarried and generally left to fend for herself. Fed up with the gossip and determined to change her life, she commissions the local weaver to make her a husband from wicker. What she gets is rather more than she bargained for: a handsome, devoted creation who quickly becomes the talk of the village. But his arrival upsets the locals’ carefully ordered world, stirring up jealousy, desire and no small amount of chaos.

Based on Ursula Wills-Jones’ short story The Wicker Husband, Wicker is a wonderfully strange blend of folk tale, romantic comedy and social satire. Olivia Colman is terrific as the spirited outsider, with Alexander Skarsgård giving the wicker husband an unexpectedly sweet sincerity, while Peter Dinklage and Elizabeth Debicki add to the eccentric ensemble. Funny, poetic and just a little bit bonkers, it’s a film about wanting to be loved — and discovering that the perfect partner might not be quite what you expected.
