About Winter of the Crow

Lesley Manville is a British professor trapped in Warsaw during martial law in this tense Cold War thriller about an ordinary woman caught in extraordinary circumstances.

Warsaw, December 1981. British professor Joan Andrews arrives to give a university lecture just as Poland is placed under martial law. Tanks fill the streets, the city is suddenly cut off from the outside world and Joan finds herself caught up in events she barely understands. Then she witnesses the secret police murder a young student. Suddenly, she is being hunted, and with the country closing down around her, Joan must find a way through the city and reach the last flight out.

Inspired by a short story by Booker and Nobel Prize-winning Polish author Olga Tokarczuk, Winter of the Crow turns Cold War history into a gripping cat-and-mouse thriller. Lesley Manville is superb as Joan, an academic whose confidence and intellectual certainty begin to crack as she finds herself in real danger. Atmospheric and tightly wound, it combines the claustrophobia of a political thriller with a compelling story about an outsider suddenly caught up in a world she barely understands.
