About In Rehearsal With: Derek Bond
Join Olivier award-winning theatre director Derek Bond for a fun, practical acting workshop looking at how to build confident, believable performances on stage.
Derek brings a director’s eye to acting, helping young performers understand how scenes work, how to make strong choices, and how to bring characters to life in a clear and truthful way.
Derek has directed shows across the UK and beyond, including A Role to Die For (Barn Theatre, Cirencester and Marylebone Theatre, London), Drop the Dead Donkey (UK Tour) and Tom Fletcher’s The Christmasaurus at the Hammersmith Apollo. His show Dinosaur World Live won the Olivier Award for Best Family Show and has toured widely in the UK and internationally. Other productions include Dragons & Mythical Beasts, Much Ado About Nothing for Dubai Opera House, Sweet Charity and Little Shop of Horrors at Manchester Royal Exchange, and Jess & Joe Forever at the Orange Tree Theatre, starring Nicola Coughlan.
Alongside directing, Derek is a regular guest tutor at several notable drama schools, including: Bristol Old Vic, LAMDA and Guildhall School of Music & Drama. He trained at the National Theatre, working with directors including Nicholas Hytner, Rufus Norris and Katie Mitchell.
The session will focus on playing scenes, exploring character, understanding intention and learning how to respond to direction — all through practical exercises and supported scene work. Most importantly, it’s about experimenting, having a go, and finding what works for you as a performer in a relaxed and encouraging space.Perfect for young people who enjoy acting, want to build confidence, and are keen to learn more about how great performances are made — both on stage and in the rehearsal room.
